Throughout the ages, the course of events changes, and accordingly, human thought adapts to the future. This inherent trait distinguishes humanity from other worlds. Philosophers across eras have expressed that humans are the only creatures capable of perceiving and anticipating the future, unlike other beings that lack this awareness. The future lies in the hands of humans, whose intellect and vision can shape reality with the limitless tools of the human mind. From this perspective, the concept of vision emerges— a forward-looking approach that sets goals and plans in the present to align with the uncertainties of the future. As the French philosopher Blaise Pascal once said, “The present is not the goal; the past and present are merely means, while the future is the objective.” Thus, the real driver of change in the future is, fundamentally, humans, whose nature is to evolve alongside time.
The word “vision” can have a metaphorical meaning, referring to a dream that can materialize into reality or to the unique insight inherent in human nature. Perhaps the most fitting description of vision in its various dimensions is expressed by the thinker Israelmore Ayivor: “Vision is foresight or foreseeing the future. Vision is a picture of one’s destiny or achievement, or simply what a person is supposed to do or become.” In our modern era, a tangible example is the visionary outlook of Apple’s technology giant, Steve Jobs. He envisioned a future where a handheld, touch-controlled device would revolutionize society, and by persistently developing it, it became an integral part of our daily lives. Just like this, the sun of vision rises, its rays spreading across society, benefiting it with warmth and light, heralding the dawn of the near future.
When vision is about people before it is about infrastructure, it forms the foundation for a transformative era. A prime example is the vision established by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with the announcement of Vision 2030 on April 25, 2016— a forward-looking initiative heralding a new era for Saudi Arabia, deeply rooted in its rich history.
This vision embodies numerous aspects and reveals hidden dimensions that unveil a vibrant and dynamic environment within the Arabian Peninsula. Many assume that leaders set visions for the future, accompanied by strategies to achieve them. However, this young leader’s vision broke the norm and reshaped conventional understandings in political, economic, and social spheres. While most visions can succeed or fail, the founder of Vision 2030 declared with determination, “People want to see Vision 2030 fail, but they will never be able to undermine it, and it will never fail.” By all measures, Vision 2030 is leading toward success, a reality its founder is committed to realizing, leaving no room for contradiction.
At its core, Vision 2030 is an economic plan designed for Saudi Arabia’s post-oil era. However, upon deeper analysis, it becomes clear that it has transcended economic aspects. It has become intertwined with human development in this new geological era— the Anthropocene— where humans are the dominant force shaping planetary changes. This vision has not only influenced the economy but has also driven human progress as an inseparable part of it. On one hand, national development programs have emerged, fostering projects that pave the way for the future. On the other, citizens embody the culture of their country, representing it through this vision. Both sides contribute to the success of Vision 2030, making it a framework that nurtures and educates, rather than one that merely implements reforms.
Saudi youth are overwhelmingly optimistic about this vision, with 98% believing in its success. Given that young people make up 70% of the population, this signifies an exceptional workforce with aspirations for actual change and an undeniable strength in making Vision 2030 a reality. It is no surprise that both young men and women, especially those actively engaged in its programs, are among the most enthusiastic supporters of its objectives.
Here, the role of individuals and institutions within society emerges— through education, continuous development, and the adoption of core values such as awareness, intellectual moderation, creativity, self-investment, responsibility, and confidence. These indicators suggest that Vision 2030 is more than a plan; it is a framework for shaping thought and individuals, carrying numerous goals and milestones necessary for its full realization. It is a journey that requires persistent effort and ambition.
The fundamental pillars of Vision 2030 are built on three core principles: A Vibrant Society, A Thriving Economy, and An Ambitious Nation. Each of these principles carries multiple meanings that ultimately contribute to sustainable development through the creation of a high-performing government characterized by efficiency and transparency.
- A Vibrant Society represents the respect and care for life in all its forms and diversity, ensuring sustainability, continuous development, and the preservation of the environment and natural resources.
- A Thriving Economy is achieved through economic activities and institutions at all levels, including gender equality as a prerequisite for sustainable development and ensuring access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for all.
- An Ambitious Nation is envisioned as one capable of integrating knowledge, values, and essential skills into a sustainable way of life, effectively showcasing and sharing its culture while elevating its overall well-being.
The 21st century will witness that among the greatest leaders of the Middle East stands a young and ambitious leader who grew up in the Arabian Peninsula, dedicating his full potential to achieving a sustainable future. His efforts are embodied in Vision 2030— a vision that encompasses both infrastructure and humanity.
